WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OTHER CONSIDERATIONS?
The height and weight of both children and adult riders must be considered along with sitting balance. If safety considerations for riders and/or volunteers outweigh the benefits of riding, applicants will not be able to participate in riding classes, but may be considered for horsemanship classes that do not include riding. Prospective riders over 125 pounds must have independent sitting balance in order to be evaluated for riding.
For riders with Down Syndrome, NARHA requires that all clients with Down Syndrome have: A. Prior to starting riding
1. A medical examination with special reference to neurologic function.
2. Initial lateral view X-rays, within the past 5 years, of the upper cervical region in: a. Full flexion b. Extension
3. Certification by a physician that an examination did not reveal atlantoaxial instability or focal neurologic disorder.
B. Annual certification from a physician that the client's annual physical examination reveals no symptoms of AAI.
C. Following the initial X-ray, indication for repeated X-rays should be made at the discretion of the rider's physician. Follow-up X-rays every 10 years is appropriate.
All riders are required to wear approved equestrian helmets. In certain instances lightweight helmets such as bicycle or hockey helmets may be considered, but only if they are recommended by an occupational or physical therapist. Helmets are furnished by TROT.
Safe footwear is required for all participants (riders and volunteers.) Boots or hard-soled shoes with heels are mandatory for riding.
